How to Pick Up and Hold a Hedgehog

I did a video today with Ms. Teazel on how to pick up and hold your new hedgehog, which can be a pretty intimidating experience if the hedgehog is very aggressive and you have never handled a hedgehog before. The key to picking them up is to do it from below. If you try to pick them up from the top they will curl into a ball with your fingers in the center, which will be painful as you will have spines pressed against your fingers.

Your new hedgehog will get more comfortable with being held if you handle them every single day. Some need more time than others to get comfortable around you. Be persistent and don’t give up on them!

In case you didn’t know, the African pygmy hedgehog is a domesticated species of hedgehog. They are not like the wild hedgehogs that roam around in the UK and other regions of the world. You can go to HedgehogCentral.com to find out more about their care and living requirements: http://www.hedgehogcentral.com/.

Thanks for watching! 🙂
